Graeme studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and gained a BA in Music Education. After a further year of vocal training at the RSAMD he then continued his post-graduate vocal studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama prior to joining English National Opera, where he is currently a member of the Olivier award-winning Chorus.
During his initial employment at English National Opera he performed in the West End production of Cats (Old Deuteronomy, Bustopher Jones and Asparagus/Growltiger) as he was keen to work with triple threat performers to enhance his Musical Theatre teaching and performing skills.
Teaching experience includes:
Mountview Theatre School (1989-99), North East of Scotland Music School, private consultations, vocal consultant to Leagh-Hicks Associates and he has coached clients from Creative Artists Agency LA, Polydor Records, Sony, and Syco Music. Graeme also works in close collaboration with Yvie Burnett.
From an early age I had the good fortune to study with talented and informed singing teachers who inspired me to develop my interest in singing to achieve a career path in both Classical and Musical Theatre genres.
It is my aim from the first lesson to impart sound technical knowledge, musical and artistic support to facilitate the advancement of the client regardless of the genre of music. I have attended courses in Estil Voice, observed singing teachers in their studio both here in the UK and in the USA, worked with many Musical Theatre, Opera Music DIrectors and choreographers and have over 28 years of singing teaching experience.
I possess good piano skills and enjoy accompanying singers.

The first lesson would normally cover postural alignment, breathing and support, voice placement, explanation and balance of the vocal registers, onset exercises, focus and brilliance of the vocal tone, alignment of well produced vowels, articulation and then coaching of a piece covering the above technical demands.

It is important for singers to update their audition repertoire so that their performance complements their current casting role type, voice character/quality and playing age range.
Although an audition piece should be comfortably familiar, choosing the "old favourite" (a piece you have sung for many years at every audition) may no longer be suitable.
If this is the case, I can suggest, coach and rehearse suitable repertoire that complements your current casting qualities.
Coaching and rehearsing of new repertoire is crucial prior to an audition in order to deliver a secure and genuine performance.
Recall auditions are often arranged at short notice and this unfortunately restricts the time available to prepare and memorise the requested material.
A coaching session should be arranged, as soon as possible, to facilitate the fast learning of such excerpts.

At a recall audition coaching, I assist in preparing the music, coach the vocal performance and rehearse the requested music, to ensure that the client is confident and well prepared for the recall.
Please contact me as soon as possible to arrange a recall audition coaching, as ideally, excerpts should be performed from memory at auditions.
After many years of training at the RSAMD and the GSMD I joined Kent Opera for one season and then joined the English National Opera in 1989.
Since then I have sung many roles and understudies at ENO as well as performing on the concert platform in oratorio and gala events here in the UK and abroad. This experience has enhanced my classical teaching work as I am familiar with the varied repertoire for each voice type as well as having a sound technical knowledge of the classical voice.
In the early stages of Classical voice lessons, especially when dealing with a young singer, I define the lessons as "building blocks" to develop a healthy efficient vocal technique. Voice building or the "vocal gym" is a series of well thought out exercises, that I prefer to be studied and accomplished prior to the singing of arias or advanced repertoire. In other words, I like to build an instrument without having the demands of difficult pieces at the initial stage of development. After this initial process more advanced repertoire can be introduced to simultaneously develop the vocal technique, musicianship and artistry.
For the more advanced student it might be necessary to revise certain aspects of the above however with constant guidance, a warm up, a technical session followed by their repertoire and then a "cool down", should be the ideal lesson format.
My techniques of teaching the Classical voice is very much a continuation of the principles and values passed down from my previous teachers, including; John Campbell, Elizabeth Izatt, Neil Mackie CBE, Ellis Keeler, Anthony Rolfe Johnson CBE, Peter Harrison and Paul Farrington. The bel canto principles, the study I have undertaken in New York observing the Classical Voice studio of Catherine Mazzone and the detail of Janice Chapman's book, "Singing and Teaching Singing, A Holistic Approach to Classical Voice" defines my approach to Classical Voice training.
Feel free to contact me with any questions, inquiries, or to arrange your first lesson.
